On a humid but otherwise perfect Memorial Day, I drove to Stephanie and Devin's new home in Highgate Center, Vermont. I was so impressed that Stephanie and Devin planned a wedding, bought a house, and moved all in the span of about 8 months!
Their new home was a natural place for Stephanie and Devin's wedding, not only because they could show it off to family and friends, but because it was perfect for an afternoon affair. It had apple and birch trees, a large field, and a patio/garden perfect for a ceremony.
Stephanie is one of the sweetest humans you'll ever meet. I met her when we had a winter portrait session, and she told me she was thinking that they wouldn't hire a wedding photographer. Frankly, I knew she'd regret it. She was putting so much work into her wedding that I thought she'd want it well-documented.
Boy was I glad when she emailed me asking if I was still available!
Steph is not only GORGEOUS. She's so real. She has a gentle, soft way about her but simultaneously has a fire in her eyes.
Their details were simple and elegant. Her dress was to die for (after photographing it, I didn't want to give it back to her). The vows were gorgeously written. And I also loved this wedding because hints of fall kept presenting themselves. Splashes of yellow and ripe apples on the tree reminded us, even on a humid day, that fall is waiting for us around the corner.
I was thrilled that Steph and Devin wanted to do a first look. First looks are a great way to have a private moment with just the couple, and get portraits done so that the couple can socialize and enjoy the wedding party after the ceremony. I always love a first look, and the romance of it all. But folks... this first look was different. The raw emotion of their first look-- the happy tears, the un-posed embraces, and the magic of the moments-- had me teary-eyed and awestruck. One moment in particular that is displayed below happened when I asked Devin to tell Stephanie the moment he knew he'd ask her to marry him. Stephanie was so joyful. It was clear that she wanted him to be her family. The way they looked at each other told me that this was the best day of their lives.
Steph and Devin, thank you so much for the privilege of photographing your wedding day. I am in love with your images, and I hope you will be, too.
This blog post is dedicated to Stephanie's mother.
